Number 3: Officially qualifying for the Olympic Games (June 11, 2012)
It is no secret that 2012 was the Year of the Olympics for me. They were a daily presence in my life and on my mind for six straight months. I travelled around the world and played matches when I felt completely exhausted, just to claw my way back up the rankings and qualify for Team U.S.A.
I knew the rankings would be frozen on June 11, and the four highest-ranked American women would be eligible as long they were ranked in the top 56 in the world. After making the quarterfinals in Rome, I probably met the requirements, but it was too close for my comfort. I knew I would have to play in the French Open. I don’t know if they even wanted me in the French Open because I was so uncomfortable and tired and I was making it pretty clear that I just wanted to go home. But I had to try to get at least one win to help my Olympic cause.
On May 27th, I won my opening match and while that didn’t exactly guarantee me a berth to the Olympics, it definitely helped. I got so emotional that night. I had tears in my eyes. It meant so much to me.
When June 11 came I was sitting at 47th in the world and the third American. I can’t explain how excited I was when I got the e-mail stating that I had put myself in standing to be on the Olympic team. It was so monumental.
I am not one for polishing trophies. In fact, I don’t even know where some of my trophies are. (When I win cups, they mostly get used as fruit bowls in my house.) But all those Olympic e-mails and documents have been printed and carefully framed.
