When USA calls, I answer.
I had the privilege of representing the USA on Sunday by playing in the Fed Cup against Sweden. I thought I’d be watching this match from the stands, but team captain Mary Joe Fernandez made a last-minute decision to put me in. When you are on a team you have to be ready to play, and I had been ready all week. In fact, I was dying to be out there.
It was a tough call for Mary Joe, who decided it was a smart move to rely on my experience. I was glad I finished in two sets because I think she was having a heart attack over her gamble of picking me to play! The match lasted about an hour and a half, and I felt good. My back didn’t bother me and while I had a little trouble with my serve I was able to keep my focus and persevere.
Serena won earlier in the day too. In the end we beat Sweden 3-2 and earned a spot in the 2014 Fed Cup World Group tournament. That means Serena and I can both play for the USA again. I thought we might have to wait until the 2016 Olympics in Rio to do that!
This day had everything I love: I competed alongside Serena, I made a profound contribution to a team effort, and I represented the United States of America. For me, it doesn’t get any better than that.
